Partyforumseasia: The Workers’Party was founded in 1957 by former Chief Minister David Marshal. In 1981, former WP-Leader J.B. Jeyaretnam (“JBJ”) won a by-election in the Anson constituency, thus becoming the first elected opposition MP since independence. In the 2011 GE, the WP won – also for the first time – a Group Representation Constituency (GRC) and six seats in Parliament.
